OPCF 27 rental vehicle coverage supporting documents

Client flying to Florida tomorrow wants rental car coverage added. BMS shows OPCF 27 available — no signed change request on file.

What OPCF 27 is (hedged summary)

FSRA lists OPCF 27 among common optional endorsements: it provides physical damage coverage for vehicles the insured may operate but does not personally own (for example rented or borrowed), subject to a deductible, and can also provide liability, accident benefits, uninsured automobile, and direct compensation–property damage coverages in specific circumstances.

The standard form title is along the lines of Liability for Damage to Non-Owned Automobile(s), and Other Coverages When Insured Persons Drive, Rent or Lease Other Automobiles. Do not rely on this summary alone — read the insurer's OPCF 27 wording and certificate schedule for limits, territory, vehicle weight, rental-period, and excluded-driver conditions. Broker blogs often cite themes such as listed drivers only, GVWR caps, Canada/U.S. territory, and short rental periods; treat those as form-dependent, not invented statutes.

Checklist lines for an OPCF 27 add

Attach to the existing auto file or spawn an endorsement mini-checklist:

  • Signed OPCF 27 / change request (OAF or carrier form)
  • Driver's licence — all drivers who may rent under the endorsement
  • Abstract if the MGA requires a mid-term eligibility check
  • Disclosure confirmation if your firm treats the change as a quote event — firm policy varies; RIBO timing is no later than quote when a quote is given
  • Advice note: deductible, limit on the schedule, territory, vehicle type/weight exclusions, credit-card vs OPCF 27 distinction

QC licence class and listed drivers against the policy before the producer binds in the BMS.

Common QC failures

  • Verbal "add rental coverage" — no signature
  • Spouse will drive the rental — not listed (or excluded) on the policy
  • Client confuses OPCF 27 with credit card rental insurance or OPCF 20 loss of use — document the advice given; do not issue a coverage opinion as legal fact
  • Licence photo only — abstract stale when the MGA requires a current one

Reject on the line; resubmit before the producer binds.

Frequently asked questions

What is OPCF 27?
FSRA describes OPCF 27 as liability for damage to non-owned automobile(s) and other coverages when insured persons drive, rent, or lease other automobiles — typically physical damage to a rented or borrowed vehicle subject to a deductible, plus related coverages in specific circumstances. Confirm the client's insurer form and schedule.
What documents support adding OPCF 27?
There is no FSRA-prescribed 'OPCF 27 document package.' Operationally: signed change request / application, licences (and abstracts if the MGA requires a mid-term check) for drivers who may rent, and a file note of limits, territory, and exclusions discussed. Exact lines vary by MGA.
Does the rental agreement go in the file before endorsement?
Usually not before adding the endorsement. Post-rental claims may ask for travel or rental dates — document advice given at bind. Confirm firm procedure.
Can clients add OPCF 27 same-day before travel?
Operationally common when markets allow mid-term changes. A checklist prevents bind without a signed request and driver QC complete — Hivi-X does not grant binding authority.
Is OPCF 27 the same as OPCF 20 or credit-card rental insurance?
No. OPCF 20 is transportation replacement / loss of use for the insured vehicle. Credit-card rental products are separate contracts. OPCF 27B is a business-operations form — not the personal-lines OPCF 27. Document the distinction; do not give legal opinions.
