Photo ID both sides — Ontario broker intake QC

Front-only licence uploads are still the most common reject in auto new-business intake. The back of the card often carries the rating detail. That is ops discipline, not a slogan that “RIBO KYC” equals FINTRAC.

Direct answer

When your carrier or brokerage policy requires government photo ID, collect what the guide asks for — frequently front and back of a driver’s licence. Reject incomplete uploads before bind. Keep the file producible for principal/RIBO review. Do not treat this article as AML legal advice.

Why the back often matters (auto)

Front often showsBack often shows
Name and photoLicence class (G, G2, M, …)
Date of birthConditions / restrictions
AddressAdditional verification fields
ExpiryAddress-change clues

Licence class changes the quote. A front-only upload hides G2 restrictions.

QC workflow

  1. Use two checklist lines: “Photo ID — front” and “Photo ID — back” (or one line with explicit both-sides instruction if firm prefers).
  2. Front only → reject the missing side with a plain-language note.
  3. Approve only when readable and names match the application.
  4. Record verification initials/date per firm policy before bind.

Health cards and other restricted ID

Prefer driver’s licence or passport. Ontario health-card collection is restricted for many non-health purposes — do not improvise; ask counsel/compliance.

Frequently asked questions

Why collect both sides of photo ID?
The back of an Ontario driver's licence often shows licence class, conditions, and other details used in auto rating. Follow your underwriting guide and firm policy.
Does RIBO require both sides on every file?
RIBO expects complete, producible client files. Exact ID lists come from carriers, MGAs, and brokerage policy — confirm with your compliance officer.
Does FINTRAC require both sides for personal auto?
Do not assume routine P&C auto intake is a FINTRAC identification event. FINTRAC duties apply to specific reporting-entity activities. Ask compliance before citing FINTRAC on a home/auto quote file.
How should CSRs reject front-only uploads?
Reject with a clear note: need the back of the licence, full card, readable. Separate front/back checklist lines reduce confusion.
Can clients upload via guest link?
Yes. Guest link (email OTP) or portal — clients photograph both sides from a phone.
